Subject: [Dbworld] Stanford’s Introduction to Databases course available online

To: dbworld@cs.wisc.edu

Stanford’s Introduction to Databases course is now available online:

http://openclassroom.stanford.edu/MainFolder/CoursePage.php?course=IntroToDatabases

We’re offering, free of charge, a complete package: custom-made video mini-lectures (with in-video quizzes), video demos, written exercises, query exercises with software instructions, and comprehensive references. All slides and scripts used in the videos are included. There are no restrictions on the use of any of the materials, although we ask that you acknowledge the source.

Topics covered:

The material in the online course is the core of what we cover in a ten-week quarter at Stanford, focusing specifically on database design and the use of database management systems for applications. We cover the relational model, relational algebra, and SQL, as well as XML data including DTDs and XML Schema for validation, and the query and transformation languages XPath, XQuery, and XSLT. We cover database design in UML, and relational design principles based on dependencies and normal forms. Many additional topics from the design and application-building perspective are also included: indexes, views, transactions, authorization, integrity constraints, triggers, and on-line analytical processing (OLAP).

Current status:

All videos for the first phase of core material are online, covering much of what we cover in our ten-week course at Stanford. Extensive SQL and XML query exercises are provided (including quick guides for the software involved), as are written exercises for relational algebra. The course materials page is complete for the current set of topics, including suggested readings in several textbooks, pointers to online materials, and all slides and scripts used in the videos.

Yet to come:

Many more quizzes embedded in the videos, written and programming exercises for the rest of the covered topics (including an interpreter for relational algebra), and coverage of additional topics beyond the core.
